QDF Fri., Session 1: Fingerpicking for the First Time: Aubrey presents simple fingerpicking patterns in ¾ and 4/4 time for song accompaniment as well as an introduction to fingerpicking the melody as an instrumental. Bring fingerpicks or just your fingers! (Beginner/Advanced Beginner) video $5, handouts $5

QDF Fri., Session 2: Chording the Melody: Aubrey presents pieces in DAD, such as the Shaker hymn, The Willow Tree, and plays chords in various positions to bring out the melody. (Intermediate and up) video $5, handouts $5

QDF Fri., Session 3: Easy-Peasy Four Equally-Distant Strings: Separate your two melody strings--which adds another drone--and create new chord flavors. You can do this with songs you already play! Aubrey discusses getting your feet wet with the four-string configuration and presents a few songs normally tabbed out for three strings. lt’s an easy transition! QDF Fri., Session 5: Songs of Jean Ritchie and the Ritchie Family: A delightful repertoire workshop using four songs Aubrey has learned over the years through her contact with Jean Ritchie and other Ritchie family members. Workshop focuses on the traditional style of playing with the noter and playing in different tunings. Aubrey also touches on using the dulcimer as a harmony voice, arrangement, and crooked rhythm. QDF Fri., Session 6: Reverse Tunings!: What is a reverse dulcimer tuning and why use one? Come find out! Aubrey presents songs in Reverse Ionian, Aeolian, Mixolydian, and Dorian. You’ll be surprised at how interesting, beautiful-sounding, and easy it is to get started! (Intermediate and up) video $5, handouts $5

QDF Fri., Session 7: Flowing Fingerstyles: Participants learn fingerpicking patterns in 3/4 and 4/4 for vocal accompaniment as well methods and embellishments for fingerpicking instrumental melodies. (Intermediate and up) video $5, handouts $5

QDF Fri., Session 8: Tunings, Keys, and Modes: Explore an intuitive way of understanding the distinctions among tunings, keys, and modes on the mountain dulcimer. Aubrey uses four songs to illustrate her points, harkening back to Jean Richie and the Ritchie Family’s folk style of playing the dulcimer and address, in a “lay person” way, concepts such as diatonic, chromatic, gapped scales, and solfege. QDF Sat., Session 1: The "Slap Strum" and other Fascinating Rhythms: Learn Aubrey's percussive slap strum as well as other rhythmic tricks and patterns including more ways to mute strings, "train-like riffs," and the "air" strum. Aubrey presents several pieces including, The Spanish Lady and a variant of Reuben’s Train, 900 Miles. (Intermediate and up) video $5, handouts $5

QDF Sat., Session 2: Chording and Singing at the Same Time!: Participants learn basic chords in 1-2 easy tunings and how to sing and play several songs! We also talk about the keys best for YOUR voice. (Advanced Beg) video $5, handouts $5

QDF Sat., Session 3: Coping in a Jam Session: What is a jam session and how do we participate? What is the culture or etiquette? Are there different kinds of jams? How do we deal with key changes? Should we develop a repertoire of common tunes and songs to better speak the “language”? Do we play along with the melodies or use back up chords? Tuned to D-A-D, we address these issues and more! (Advanced Beginner/Intermediate and up) video $5, handouts $5

QDF Sat., Session 4: Religious Songs: Drawing from a variety of sources in American folk music, Aubrey presents a Shaker Hymn, a minstrel-era song called “Angel Gabriel,” the exquisite “Resignation (My Shepherd Shall Supply My Need),” and the well-known “Angel Band.” You’ll need a capo for one of the songs! QDF Sat., Session 6: Songs of the Sea: Aubrey, an Ocean State native, presents traditional seafaring songs each in its own way beautiful, playful, tragic, or joyous. You will need a capo for one of the songs. (Intermediate and up) video $5, handouts $5

QDF Sat., Session 8: Diving Deep with One Song: Spanish Lady: It is easy to spend a full workshop examining and learning this fascinating, beautiful traditional Irish song. Chording, slap strumming and other rhythmic techniques, singing, crooked rhythm and the song’s historical back story are all be covered in this exciting session! DDG Aubrey Session 2, Fri., July 10th : Using the Capo on the Mountain Dulcimer
Level: Intermediate – Advanced
Description: What an interesting and strange thing to do on a dulcimer! Aubrey discusses what capoing means on the dulcimer and how it differs from the guitar or banjo. The class experiments and runs through a few songs and tunes using the capo. video $5, handouts $5

Description: Participants learn basic chords for the DAD Mixolydian tuning and how to sing and play at the same time! Aubrey chooses from some of her favorite traditional ballads. video $5, handouts $5

DDG Aubrey Session 6, Sat., July 11th: Flatfoot Clogging
Level: Everyone is welcome—great for all ages!
Description: Clogging is a percussive form of dance that precedes tap dancing, with rhythmic tapping of the feet, traditionally danced to old-time fiddle tunes. Aubrey teaches simple clogging (also known as flatfooting, jigdancing, or buckdancing) steps learned from the masters in Kentucky and North Carolina. We also watch a few videos and discuss the presence of percussive dance around the world. video $5, handouts $5

DDG Aubrey Session 7, Sat., July 11th: Improvising on the Mountain Dulcimer
Level: All Levels
Description: Related to playing by ear, learn to play along with the group in an informal, loosely structured manner. The workshop discusses how to improvise with chords, lead and bass note playing and will articulate some of the tricks and structure behind what appears to be pure artistic “happening.” video $5, handouts $5

DDG Elwood Session 1, Fri., July 10th, Playing in DAA
Level: Beginner – Early Intermediate
Description: Learn some songs in this Ionian tuning. Noting, strumming and fingerpicking patterns will be studied while adding songs to your repertoire. video $5, handouts $5

DDG Elwood Session 2, Fri., July 10th, Using the Noter
Level: All Levels
Description: Participants will learn how to play the mountain dulcimer in D-A-dd using the noting stick: one of the most ancient and haunting, yet quite simple, methods of playing. Students will learn how to hold the noter most effectively, as well as a few tricks for ornamentation including sliding, hammering down, and pulling off while building a song and tune repertoire. video $5, handouts $5

DDG Elwood Session 3, Fri., July 10th, Coping in a Jam Session
Level: Early Intermediate – Intermediate
Description: Learn to play in different keys on the mountain dulcimer (tuned to D-A-dd) by using simple I, IV, V chord progressions, as well as by retuning and applying a capo. The class will do some experimenting while learning songs and tunes. Bring a capo. video $5, handouts $5

DDG Elwood Session 5, Sat., July 11th, Fingerpicking for the First Time
Level: Beginner – Early Intermediate
Description: Elwood will provide a framework for finger-picking simple tunes on the mountain dulcimer in D-A-dd. Participants will learn basic patterns for vocal accompaniment as well as methods for finger-picking in common and ¾ time signatures. video $5, handouts $5

DDG Elwood, Session 6, Sat., July 11th, Write Your Own Tablature in DAD
Level: All Levels
Description: If you ever wanted to uncover the mystery of tabbing your favorite songs, this workshop is designed to teach just that. We will first tab out the melody of a song, then determine the main chords and their positions. Finally, we will turn each note into its own special chord until the song is completely tabbed to our pleasing. video $5, handouts $5

DDG Elwood Session 7, Sat., July 11th, Songs of the Carter Family in DAD
Level: Beginner – Early Intermediate
Description: Discover the wonders of this early pioneering American country music group whose songs have bewitched music fans and players for decades. Using songs from Elwood’s songbook, Such Singing You Will Hear, participants will use the noting stick, chords and finger-picking styles to build a repertoire of these glorious songs. video $5, handouts $5

QDF 2.0, Fri., Session 2: Diving Deep with One Song: The Blackest Crow: It is easy to spend a full workshop examining this beautiful traditional song that has many variants. Deciding key and tuning, chording, fingerpicking patterns for 3- or 4-equally distant strings, singing, fingerpicking melody, using the dulcimer as a harmony voice, identifying melodic structure, drilling difficult parts, and discussing the song’s historical back story will all be covered in this exciting session! September 18 & 25, 2020: Exploring Traditional Ballads: Mountain Dulcimer Workshop, Intermediate level, 4 hours; $20 videos, $10 handouts.
An exploration of traditional American and Anglo/Celtic story songs that can be played on the mountain dulcimer as well as other instruments. In addition to being a repertoire workshop, we explore cultural history and backstories of the songs, where and how they were collected, and how to interpret them for our modern ears, hearts, and minds. We touch on themes of societal boundaries, gender roles, forbidden love, broken tokens, women warriors, the devil, cautionary songs, and stories that end well! A total of 12 songs are presented as well as archives, video clips, and some of Aubrey's short Ozark Highlands Radio segments.

October 27, 2020, A Study in D-G-D: Mountain Dulcimer Workshop, Intermediate level, 2 hours; $10 video, $5 handouts.
An exploration of this stunning mountain dulcimer tuning, D-G-D, Reverse Ionian. We cover four songs in the workshop: The Conscript's Departure, A Country Life, The Devil and the Farmer's Wife, and As I Roved Out

November 18, 2020, Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You": Mountain Dulcimer Workshop, Intermediate level & up, 90 minutes; $10 video, $5 handouts. 
Join Aubrey in this fascinating foray into one of Joni Mitchell's magnificent songs, "A Case of You." We will explore her beautiful lyrics, tunings, chord shapes, irregular rhythms and phrasings, and her myriad renditions of just this one song over time. Focus will be on the 1971 version on her seminal album, Blue. Be prepared to start out in the tuning: G#-G#-G#--all tuned below middle C, the bass being an octave lower than the middle and melody strings.

January 8, 2021, A Study in Song: Dan Dutton's "The Angel's Part": Mountain Dulcimer Workshop, Intermediate level & up, 105 minutes; $10 video, $5 handouts.
Join Aubrey in this in-depth examination of the beautiful song, The Angel's Part, written by Daniel Dutton about his mother's childhood longing for the part of the angel in a church play. Skills and concepts covered include playing with four equally-distant strings in the unique tuning C-G-D-C; drones; fingerpicking patterns; fingerpicking the melody; singing and playing; creating instrumentals; arranging and interpreting.

January 19, 2021, A Study in Song: Clarence Ashley's iconic "The Cuckoo": Clawhammer Banjo Workshop, Intermediate level & up, 90 minutes; $10 video, $5 handouts. 
Skills/Concepts covered: basic clawhammer banjo technique and variations including the "Galax Lick"; "Sawmill" Tuning; gapped scales; singing and playing; playing harmony while singing; historical notes.

July 11, 2023: Therapeutic Music for All Ages: Songs of Solace, Joy and Comfort  Intermediate level and up, 3 hours; $10 video, $10 handouts
With a degree in psychology and 40+ years of experience playing music in hospitals, congregate living settings, bedsides, funerals, schools, bereavement groups, churches, and more, Aubrey, a longtime part of the Healing Arts team at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, RI, presents songs, tunes, tricks, and other activities that help promote powerful responses of comfort and well-being in stressful, heart-rending situations. Aubrey will address the delicate nature of this type of musical practice and leave room to discuss the unique and magical role that music, beauty and humor have in the presence of suffering and other human challenges. There will be time for group discussion and interaction. The instrumental focus is mountain dulcimer but any instrument players and all singers are welcome. Aug. 24, 2023: Therapeutic Music for All Ages: More Repertoire!  Intermediate level and up, 2 1/2 hours; $10 video, $10 handouts
How do we decide what songs to play for therapeutic music activities? What pieces in our existing repertoires work well in nursing homes or rehab or other congregate living settings or for children in the hospital or the dying? Do we need to look carefully at lyric content and song origins, tempo, volume and instrumentation? Is it OK to change lyrics or other aspects of songs? Join Aubrey as she presents a variety of songs tabbed out for mountain dulcimer; simple lyric sheets with chord letters for any instrument; and childhood songs for any instrument and voice that we will play from memory and by ear. Oct. 26, 2023: Therapeutic Music REPERTOIRE session for Eldercare Settings  Intermediate level and up, 2 1/2 hours; $10 video, $10 handouts
Join Aubrey for a session specifically addressing repertoire, narration, and interaction in eldercare settings such as skilled nursing homes, rehab and respite, memory care, assisted living, senior centers, and more. How do we decide what songs/musical pieces to play? What pieces in our existing repertoires work well? What new pieces can we learn? How might we get folks to participate? Should we play songs that are likely familiar to the population or new/different or both? Aubrey will present a variety of songs and tunes with standard notation, mountain dulcimer tab, lyric sheets, and chords as well as notes, comments, and other activities that go over well in eldercare settings.
